White Fringetree

Chionanthus virginicus

Height: 4–9 mRegion: Southeastern U.S.; Maryland woods and stream margins

White fringetree is a small tree or large shrub with showy, fragrant white flowers in late spring—long, strap-like petals give a fringed appearance. Leaves are broad and opposite; female plants bear dark blue fruits.

Habitat and range

In Maryland, white fringetree grows in moist woods, along streams, and on slopes, often in partial shade. It is more common on the coastal plain and piedmont and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils.

Uses and significance

Widely planted as an ornamental for its flowers and form. The tree supports pollinators and provides fruit for birds. It is the state tree of Missouri and a valued native ornamental in eastern landscapes.
