Sourwood is a small tree with long, curved clusters of white flowers in summer and brilliant red fall color. The leaves are sour to taste and alternate; the bark is blocky and gray.
Habitat and range
In Maryland, sourwood grows on dry to moist slopes and in open woods, often in the understory. It is more common in the piedmont and mountains and prefers well-drained, acidic soils.
Uses and significance
Sourwood honey is highly prized. The tree is planted as an ornamental for its flowers and fall color. Sourwood is an important component of southern Appalachian and piedmont forests and supports pollinators.
