Smooth Sumac

Rhus glabra

Height: 2–5 mRegion: Eastern and central North America; Maryland fields and roadsides

Smooth sumac is a shrub or small tree with compound leaves, smooth (hairless) twigs, and upright clusters of red fruits that persist into winter. Fall color is vivid red and orange.

Habitat and range

In Maryland, smooth sumac grows in old fields, along roadsides, and in open, disturbed sites. It spreads by root suckers and forms thickets, especially on dry, sunny, well-drained soils.

Uses and significance

The fruits can be used to make a lemonade-like drink. Sumac provides food and cover for wildlife and is important in successional habitats. The foliage is a host for several butterfly species.
