Mockernut hickory is a large tree with compound leaves that are fuzzy underneath, thick husks, and hard, edible nuts. The bark is dark gray and deeply furrowed.


Habitat and range


In Maryland, mockernut hickory grows on dry ridges, slopes, and in mixed hardwood forests across the state. It prefers well-drained, often acidic soils and is common in oak-hickory stands.


Uses and significance


The wood is used for tool handles, flooring, and smoking meat. Nuts are eaten by people and wildlife. Mockernut is an important component of upland hardwood forests and provides mast for many species.
